Frequently Asked Hydronic Engineering Questions

What causes a circulator pump to be scalding hot while the radiators stay cold?

Centrifugal wet-rotor pumps cannot compress or move air. When an air pocket enters the pump volute, water circulation stops immediately. Because 120V continues powering the stator without water flow carrying away thermal energy, 100% of the electrical input converts to resistive heat inside the motor casing.

Can cast iron circulator pumps be used on domestic hot water (DHW) recirculation loops?

No. Cast iron circulators (e.g. Taco 007-F5) are strictly engineered for closed-loop hydronic systems with zero dissolved oxygen. In potable open water circuits, continuous oxygen replenishment causes rapid internal rusting, seizing the impeller within weeks. Potable recirculation requires Bronze (007-BF5) or Stainless Steel (007-SF5) bodies.

How do you know if a circulator pump motor run capacitor has failed?

Disconnect power and discharge the capacitor. Measure across the leads with a digital multimeter on the microfarad (µF) scale. A standard Taco or Grundfos run capacitor is rated at 5.0µF to 8.0µF ±5%. A reading below tolerance, 0.0µF, or infinite resistance indicates dielectric breakdown, preventing the motor from generating start torque.
